Andrii Portnov

Andrii Portnov is Professor of Entangled History of Ukraine at the European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder) and Guest Professor at the University of Potsdam. He graduated from the Universities of Dnipro (M.A. in History) and Warsaw (M.A. in Cultural Studies). In 2005, he defended his PhD dissertation on Ukrainian emigration in inter-war Poland at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Lviv. In the years 2006-2010, he worked as the editor-in-chief of “Ukraїna Moderna”, a humanities journal based in Kyiv. He came to Berlin in 2012 as a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) and started lecturing on Ukrainian Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2014-2015, he was Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow at the Institute for Slavic Studies of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) in Potsdam. In 2015, he was awarded the Baron Velge Prize and conducted a series of lectures at the Free University of Brussels as International Chair for the History of the Second World War. He has lectured and conducted research at the Universities of Basel and Geneva, the Free University Berlin, SciencesPo Paris, SciencesPo Lyon, and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna.

In 2015, he co-founded a Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative which, in 2016, transformed itself into the PRISMA UKRAЇNA Research Network Eastern Europe at the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin.

The majority of his publications are devoted to intellectual history, historiography, genocide and memory studies in Eastern and Central Europe. He has published five books, including Ukrainian Exercises with History (published in 2010 by the International Memorial in Moscow), and Histories for Home Use: The Polish-Russian-Ukrainian Triangle of Memory (published in 2013 in Kyiv and awarded Yuri Shevelov Prize). He also published numerous articles in English, German, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Czech, Japanese and other languages. His current book project deals with the biography of the city of Dnipro(petrovsk).
