Soviet Federalism after 1945: An External Showcase for the Republics?

Sabine Dullin (SciencesPo Paris), Chair: Volker Weichsel (DGO)

Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin

The federal framework, a direct legacy of the Russian Revolution and of World War II, came back to political prominence during the Perestroika and served as a key explanatory factor to understand the transition from Soviet Republics to independent states. At that time, sovereignty became an effective political weapon for antiunion forces. How, when and to which extent could Soviet republics act as sovereign entities? The lecture will focus on the growing importance of republics in Soviet diplomacy, notably Belarus and the Ukraine, two republics that gained international recognition after 1945.
