Book Launch and Discussion: War, Migration, Memory (Viktoriya Sereda, ed.)

War, Migration, Memory_Cover picture

Marking three years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, war and mass displacement in Ukraine have triggered profound reevaluations of the past, major cultural references and collective identities. These issues have been taken up by scholars in the recently published collective volume “War, Migration, Memory: Perspectives on Russia's War Against Ukraine (Transcript, 2025)”. All texts collected in the volume have been written by Ukrainian scholars under the duress of war and displacement. The panel discussion will explore impact of war on minorities and experiences of dislocation, as well as shifts in memory and symbolic representations. Conceptualized as an open dialogue between German and Ukrainian academics, the panel will discuss selected case studies from the collected volume considering broader debates in social sciences and cultural studies. The contributions touch upon topics relevant for the present and future of Ukraine and Ukrainians within Europe, such as the nexus between memory culture and displacement, minority experience during wartime, or how social media shapes war witnessing. By bringing together Ukrainian and German scholars from different disciplines the panel aims to foster a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary dimensions of war, memory, and displacement.
