The objective of the workshop is to provide a space to discuss the current war-time un/certainties faced by Ukraine and Ukrainians due to the full-scale Russian invasion. We aim to provide a platform for an exchange and interaction for researchers from different fields of study to identify common concerns and gaps in our current understanding of the complex and dynamic issues and processes the war imposes on Ukrainian society, and on Europe in general. We invite for a conversation to rethink past, present and future challenges of War, Migration, and Memory through the prism of Ukraine. The workshop will allow researchers to connect, showcase their research, gain detailed feedback from their peers, and identify opportunities for future collaboration.

We suggest structuring the workshop around the following topics: 

1. Im/Mobilities

• Stay-return decision-making processes of Ukrainians displaced within and outside of the country;
• Integration of displaced Ukrainians within the host communities and countries;
• Intersectionality, in/visibility and vulnerability in displacement; 
• Cross-national studies of Ukrainian forced migration;
• Gaps in public discourses and academic research related to forced displacement.

 2. Memory during War

• Memory and war: private, collective, and networked memory practices;
• War-time identity and memory transformations;  
• Memories of im/mobility, arrival, and return.

 3. War-Time Media Representations & Publics:

• Ukraine and Ukrainians in national and international media during the war;
• Narratives and representations of unity & solidarity, exclusion & othering;
• Communication practices and media consumption of displaced Ukrainians;
• Artistic practices in the work with migrants/displaced people.

 4. Ukrainian Un/certainties and the Future of Europe

• Gaps in current theorization of ‘un/certainties’ and their effects;
• Post-temporary protection directive options for the displaced Ukrainians;
• Migration debates in Germany, Ukraine, and Central-Eastern Europe;
• Perceptions of security and war in Europe.

Application process

There is no workshop participation fee. For on-site participants, lunch and dinner on November 14, and lunch on November 15 will be provided. Participants are responsible for covering the cost of travel and accommodation. A limited number of travel and accommodation bursaries are available. If you wish to apply for these funds, please indicate this in your application and include a brief statement of need (up to 200 words) with your application. Scholars from Ukraine, PhD students, Early-Career Researchers, and those who are not in permanent employment are particularly encouraged to apply and will be notified about the outcome of  their bursary application by the end of July. 

The workshop will be interdisciplinary. We, therefore, look forward to receiving papers (and works in progress) from various disciplines such as sociology, history, cultural and media studies, demography, psychology, political science, anthropology, geography. Scholars at all stages of their career are welcome to apply.
